Overview

Altemia is a proprietary medical food formulated as a mixture of lipids, primarily providing a highly bioavailable form of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid. It is designed for the dietary management of sickle cell disease (SCD) in pediatric and adult patients. The product aims to replenish DHA and other crucial lipids that are deficient in the red blood cell membranes of SCD patients due to hemoglobin mutations. By restoring these lipids, Altemia helps improve membrane fluidity, reduce chronic inflammation, decrease red blood cell adhesion and hemolysis, and ultimately lower the frequency of vaso-occlusive crises (VOC), anemia, organ damage, and other complications associated with SCD. Clinical studies have shown improvements in biomarkers such as hemoglobin levels and reductions in VOCs with Altemia use[1][5][6][8].
