Althaea officinalis extract, commonly known as *marshmallow root extract*, is a botanical extract derived from the root of the Althaea officinalis plant. It contains bioactive constituents such as water-soluble polysaccharides (including galacturorhamnans, arabinans, glucans, and arabinogalactans), flavonoids, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, isoquercitrin, coumarins, phytosterols, tannins, and various amino acids[3]. The extract demonstrates antitussive (cough-suppressant), anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and mucosal-protective effects in preclinical and clinical settings[1][2][3]. Its mechanism as an antitussive is primarily attributed to forming a protective bioadhesive layer over irritated mucosa, reducing irritation and promoting regeneration, as well as modulating inflammatory mediator release and oxidative stress response[2][3].
