Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Althaeae sirupus-AKOS (marshmallow root syrup) is an approved herbal expectorant developed and marketed by Binnopharm (manufactured at its Sintez/AKOS facility). The active ingredient is an extract of the root of Althaea officinalis (marshmallow), which contains plant mucilage, pectin, starch, and betaine. It acts by coating the mucosal membranes of the respiratory tract, reducing irritation, and stimulating bronchial secretion and ciliary activity, thereby facilitating the expectoration of sputum. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of respiratory tract diseases accompanied by a cough with difficult-to-expel sputum, such as tracheitis, bronchitis, and laryngitis.
