Overview

Altrenogest is a synthetic steroidal progestin used primarily in veterinary medicine to suppress or synchronize estrus (heat) in female horses (mares) and pigs (gilts)[3][4][5]. It is structurally related to trenbolone and acts as an agonist of the progesterone receptor. By binding to these receptors and mimicking the effects of endogenous progesterone[6], altrenogest inhibits the secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus. This leads to reduced release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), preventing ovulation and stabilizing the uterine lining[6][8]. The drug is administered orally as a solution for horses or mixed with feed for pigs. Its main indications are suppression of estrus for breeding management or performance scheduling in mares and synchronization of estrus in gilts[1][2][4]. Altrenogest is approved only for veterinary use; it is not indicated for human use due to potential health risks upon exposure[4]. It has been marketed since the early 1980s under various brand names depending on species and region.
