Altropane is a phenyltropane derivative and small molecule radiopharmaceutical developed primarily as a molecular imaging agent for the dopamine transporter (DAT). It acts as a potent dopamine reuptake inhibitor and binds specifically to DAT on the surface of dopamine-producing neurons. When radiolabeled with iodine-123 ([123I]), it is used in single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging to visualize DAT density in the brain. This property makes it useful for distinguishing Parkinsonian syndromes from other movement disorders by detecting reduced DAT levels characteristic of Parkinson's disease. Altropane has also been investigated for diagnostic use in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and dementia[1][2][3][5][7][8].
