Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Altsulin** is an investigational cellular therapy product developed by ALTuCELL consisting of microencapsulated Sertoli cells designed to provide a potential cure for insulin-dependent diabetes, particularly type 1 diabetes, by enabling local production of insulin and immunosuppressive factors. Sertoli cells, sourced from porcine testes, are immunoprotected within patented AltuCaps® microcapsules to transplant into patients without requiring immunosuppression, aiming to restore glucose homeostasis through sustained insulin secretion in response to blood glucose levels. Generex Biotechnology announced the first-in-human clinical trial in 2019 following their acquisition of a 51% stake in ALTuCELL, targeting remediation of type 1 diabetes and potentially other neurodegenerative conditions via neuroprotection.
