Overview

ALTUSTEM is a cell therapy being developed by ALTuCell for the treatment of early-onset Type 1 Diabetes, specifically aimed at beta cell preservation. The therapy consists of ultra-purified, clinical-grade myofibroblasts derived from the Wharton's jelly of human umbilical cords. These cells are delivered using ALTuCell's proprietary Altucap technology, which involves micro-encapsulation in ultra-pure alginate-based capsules. This delivery system provides an immune-protective barrier that shields the transplanted cells from the patient's autoimmune response, allowing them to function and preserve endogenous insulin-producing cells without the need for systemic immunosuppressant drugs or HLA matching. ALTUSTEM is currently in the preclinical development phase and is intended to stop the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells.
