Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Alum mouth rinse is an investigational oral rinse formulated with alum (potassium aluminum sulfate) as its active ingredient. It is being evaluated as an alternative to standard antimicrobial mouth rinses, such as chlorhexidine, for the management of plaque-induced gingivitis and the reduction of oral bacterial load. The rinse is typically prepared as a 0.02 molar aqueous solution of alum. Its therapeutic mechanism is attributed to the natural astringent and antimicrobial properties of aluminum salts, which help tighten gingival tissues, reduce inflammation, and inhibit key oral pathogens like *Streptococcus mutans*. Clinical evaluation includes a pilot randomized controlled trial conducted by the Manav Rachna International Institute of Research and Studies in adults undergoing clear aligner orthodontic therapy.
