Overview

Aluminium hydroxide is an inorganic compound with the formula Al(OH)3. It is widely used as an antacid to neutralize excess stomach acid and relieve symptoms such as heartburn, gastric pain, and acid reflux. In addition to its use in gastrointestinal disorders (such as peptic ulcer disease and gastroesophageal reflux disease), it is also employed in combination with calcium supplements and vitamin D for the treatment of neonatal hypocalcemia[2]. Aluminium hydroxide acts by directly neutralizing gastric hydrochloric acid through a chemical reaction that produces water and soluble aluminum salts. It can also be used as a phosphate binder in patients with chronic kidney disease to reduce serum phosphate levels[6]. Another major application is as an adjuvant (notably under the brand name Alhydrogel) in vaccines, where it enhances immune responses by stimulating antibody production and promoting Th2-mediated immunity[5][8]. The compound has low solubility in water but dissolves in acids or alkalis.
