Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aluminium hydroxide + magnesium hydroxide + simethicone is an over-the-counter combination antacid and antiflatulent medication formulated as an oral suspension or chewable tablet. It is widely used for the symptomatic relief of hyperacidity, heartburn, acid indigestion, stomach upset, bloating, and gas-related discomfort. The antacid components, aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide, work by neutralizing gastric acid secreted from parietal cells of the stomach, thereby reducing acidity and relieving heartburn. Simethicone acts as an antifoaming agent by reducing the surface tension of gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract, causing them to coalesce into larger bubbles that can be more easily expelled, which relieves bloating and flatulence. This combination is balanced to minimize gastrointestinal side effects, as the constipating effect of aluminium hydroxide is offset by the laxative effect of magnesium hydroxide.
