Aluminium oxide is an inorganic compound used as a vaccine adjuvant in the clinical development of Parkinson's disease therapies by Affiris AG. It is specifically employed in the formulation of AFFITOPE PD01A, an active immunotherapy targeting alpha-synuclein. The adjuvant is adsorbed to the peptide antigen to enhance its immunogenicity by stimulating the innate immune system and creating a depot effect at the injection site. In Phase I clinical trials, such as those involving Parkinson's patients with GBA mutations (PD-GBA), aluminium oxide is also used as a standalone intervention in the placebo arm to maintain the study blind, as it mimics the local injection site reactions of the active vaccine.
