Aluminium phthalocyanine chloride tetrasulphonic acid is a water-soluble phthalocyanine compound used primarily as a photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy (PDT). Upon activation by specific wavelengths of light, it generates reactive oxygen species, notably singlet oxygen, which cause targeted oxidative damage to cellular components leading to cell death. It localizes preferentially to intracellular organelles, especially mitochondria and lysosomes, making it effective for eradicating cancer stem cells and tumor cells. Its high photostability, amphiphilic properties, and low dark toxicity make it a promising agent for non-invasive treatment of cancers, notably lung and pancreatic cancer. It is not a conventional pharmaceutical but is used experimentally and in research settings for photodynamic applications[3][5].
