Overview

Aluminum cation is the trivalent form of aluminum (Al^3+) and serves as the active ionic species in various pharmaceutical and industrial compounds. In medicine, it is most commonly encountered as a component of antacids (such as aluminum hydroxide) and topical astringents (such as Burow's solution, which contains aluminum acetate). The primary mechanism of action involves its ability to neutralize gastric acid when used orally or to act as an astringent by precipitating proteins on skin or mucosal surfaces when applied topically. Aluminum cation can also bind phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing serum phosphate levels in patients with hyperphosphatemia. It has antibacterial properties due to its ability to damage bacterial cell walls[1][2][4][5][8].
