Overview
Aluminum chloride is an inorganic compound with the formula AlCl3. It is most commonly used in medicine as a topical antiperspirant and astringent for the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), particularly in axillary (underarm), palmar (hand), and plantar (foot) regions. Its mechanism of action involves obstructing distal sweat gland ducts by precipitating with mucopolysaccharides and damaging epithelial cells along the duct lumen to form a plug that blocks sweat output. Aluminum chloride also acts as an astringent by promoting hemostasis through protein precipitation on superficial mucosal layers. In pharmaceutical manufacturing it may be used as an excipient or catalyst[1][2][3][4][5].
