Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aluminum chloride 20% in alcohol is a topical antiperspirant formulation being studied by the University of Utah for the treatment of residual limb hyperhidrosis in amputees. The active ingredient, aluminum chloride hexahydrate, is a small molecule that works by forming metal ion precipitates with mucopolysaccharides at the opening of sweat glands. These precipitates create a physical plug within the sweat gland ducts, effectively blocking the secretion of sweat. This formulation is being evaluated in a Phase 1 clinical trial (NCT03416348) to establish an evidence-based treatment algorithm for amputees, whose prosthetic use and skin health are often compromised by excessive sweating. It represents a first-line topical approach before progressing to more invasive interventions like botulinum toxin injections.
