Aluminum-curcumin complex is a metal-curcumin coordination compound where curcumin forms a chelate with aluminum ions. This complex represents an emerging therapeutic approach to enhance the pharmacological properties of curcumin, a natural compound derived from turmeric. Metal-curcumin complexes generally improve upon native curcumin's limitations including poor water solubility, low bioavailability, rapid metabolism, and quick systemic elimination. The aluminum-curcumin complex has demonstrated enhanced **anticancer efficacy** compared to curcumin alone, particularly in colorectal cancer models. The complex works by modulating apoptotic pathways, significantly decreasing expression of anti-apoptotic genes (telomerase, Bcl-2, miRNA-21) while increasing pro-apoptotic genes (BAX, miRNA-122, FASLG). The mechanism involves aluminum's ability to stimulate the immune system, creating a synergistic effect with curcumin's inherent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Additionally, curcumin can chelate aluminum ions to reduce aluminum toxicity, demonstrating neuroprotective effects by preventing aluminum-induced oxidative stress and cognitive impairment.
