Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aluminum hydroxide + magnesium hydroxide is an over-the-counter combination antacid used to relieve symptoms of heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach, and upset stomach. It is also sometimes used in the management of peptic ulcer disease and gastritis. The combination works by neutralizing existing gastric hydrochloric acid through a direct chemical reaction in the stomach. Aluminum hydroxide acts as a slow-acting antacid with constipating effects; magnesium hydroxide acts more rapidly but can cause diarrhea. Their combined use balances these gastrointestinal side effects while providing effective acid neutralization[1][2][3][4][6]. This medication does not inhibit gastric acid production but rather neutralizes it after secretion.
