Overview

**Aluminum phthalocyanine chloride** is a second-generation, hydrophobic, organometallic photosensitizer widely used in photodynamic therapy (PDT), especially for cancer and antimicrobial indications. When activated by light (typically 660–680 nm), it produces reactive oxygen species (ROS) that result in cytotoxic effects, mainly by inducing oxidative damage and cell death in the targeted tissues. Its main limitation is high hydrophobicity, which leads to the risk of aggregation in aqueous media and poor bioavailability; various nanoemulsion and hydrogel delivery systems have been developed to overcome these obstacles. It is not a systemically approved pharmaceutical but is studied primarily for topical or localized photodynamic therapies in preclinical and investigational clinical contexts[3][5][7].
