Overview

Alustal is an allergen immunotherapy (AIT) product developed and marketed by Stallergenes Greer. It consists of allergen extracts (such as pollen, dust mites, or molds) adsorbed onto an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant, formulated as a suspension for subcutaneous injection (SCIT). Alustal is indicated for the treatment of Type I allergic diseases, including seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and mild to moderate asthma in adults and children aged five and older. The mechanism of action involves the slow release of allergens from the aluminum adjuvant at the injection site, which facilitates the induction of clinical and immunological tolerance. This process modulates the immune system by shifting the response from a Th2-dominated allergic profile toward a Th1 and regulatory T-cell (Treg) response, ultimately reducing the production of allergen-specific IgE and decreasing inflammatory symptoms upon subsequent allergen exposure.
