Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Alutard-SQ is a range of allergen-specific subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) products developed by ALK-Abelló. It consists of standardized allergen extracts (such as those from pollens, house dust mites, or animal dander) that are adsorbed onto aluminum hydroxide to create a depot for slow release. This formulation is designed to provide a prolonged immunological stimulus while minimizing the risk of systemic allergic reactions. The primary mechanism of action involves allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT), which induces a shift in the immune response from a pro-allergic Th2 profile to a Th1 and regulatory T-cell (Treg) profile. This shift is characterized by the production of blocking antibodies, specifically allergen-specific IgG4, and a reduction in the activation and recruitment of mast cells, basophils, and eosinophils. Alutard-SQ is indicated for the treatment of IgE-mediated allergic diseases, including allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and allergic asthma, particularly when symptomatic treatment is insufficient.
