Alutard SQ Birch

Alutard SQ Birch is an allergen immunotherapy (AIT) product developed by ALK for the treatment of IgE-mediated allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma triggered by birch pollen (*Betula verrucosa*). The medication consists of a standardized allergen extract adsorbed onto aluminum hydroxide, specifically formulated for subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT). Its mechanism of action involves the induction of immune tolerance through repeated exposure to increasing doses of the allergen. This process modulates the T-cell response, shifting it from a Th2-skewed profile associated with allergy toward a Th1 and regulatory T-cell (Treg) dominated response. This shift results in a reduction of allergen-specific IgE levels and an increase in protective allergen-specific IgG4 antibodies, which act to block the allergic cascade. By targeting the underlying cause of the allergic response, Alutard SQ Birch provides long-term symptomatic relief and may modify the natural course of the disease, potentially preventing the development of asthma in patients with allergic rhinitis.
