ALVAC-CEA is an investigational cancer vaccine consisting of a recombinant canarypox virus (ALVAC) engineered to express the human carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). ALVAC is a highly attenuated, non-replicating avipoxvirus vector derived from canarypox. Upon administration, the vaccine infects host cells and induces the expression of CEA, which serves as a tumor-associated antigen. This process is designed to stimulate a specific cellular immune response, particularly cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTLs), against CEA-expressing malignant cells. It has been primarily studied in patients with advanced CEA-expressing tumors, such as colorectal cancer, often as part of a heterologous prime-boost strategy involving other viral vectors like Vaccinia-CEA or in combination with cytokines like IL-2 and GM-CSF.
