Overview

ALVAC-hB7.1 + recombinant interferon gamma is an experimental combination immunotherapy developed by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) for the treatment of refractory epithelial ovarian cancer. The regimen involves the intraperitoneal administration of an autologous tumor cell vaccine and recombinant interferon gamma (rIFN-gamma). The vaccine component, ALVAC-hB7.1, utilizes a recombinant canarypox virus vector to deliver the human B7.1 (CD80) gene into the patient's own tumor cells, which are then reintroduced to provide costimulatory signals to T cells. Recombinant interferon gamma is a potent cytokine that enhances the expression of Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) class I and II molecules on tumor cells and activates macrophages and natural killer cells. By delivering these agents directly into the peritoneal cavity, the therapy aims to stimulate a localized, robust anti-tumor immune response in patients with advanced ovarian cancer.
