ALVAC-HIV vCP205 is a second-generation recombinant viral vector vaccine candidate designed to prevent or treat HIV-1 infection. It utilizes the attenuated ALVAC (canarypox) vector to deliver and express specific HIV-1 genetic sequences, including the envelope glycoprotein gp120 from the HIV-1 MN strain, the transmembrane anchor (gp41) of the LAI strain, and the Gag and Protease proteins also from the LAI strain. When administered, the vaccine infects host cells and triggers the endogenous production of these HIV-1 antigens, which are then presented to the immune system. This process is intended to elicit both humoral immune responses, such as neutralizing antibodies, and cellular immune responses, specifically CD8+ cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTLs). vCP205 has been extensively studied in heterologous prime-boost regimens, frequently serving as the priming agent followed by boosts with recombinant subunit proteins like rgp120.
