ALVAC-IL-12 is a recombinant canarypox virus vector engineered to express interleukin 12 (IL-12), a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine. The vector is replication-defective in mammalian cells and thus safe for use as an immunotherapeutic agent. IL-12 promotes cell-mediated immunity by inducing T helper 1 (Th1) cell differentiation, enhancing activation and cytotoxic activity of T cells and natural killer (NK) cells, inhibiting or reprogramming immunosuppressive tumor-associated macrophages and myeloid-derived suppressor cells, and stimulating interferon-gamma production[2]. This mechanism supports antitumor immune responses. The drug has been explored primarily as an immunotherapy for cancer.
