Overview

ALVAC-IL-2 is a recombinant canarypox virus (ALVAC) vector engineered to express interleukin 2 (IL-2), used as an immunotherapy primarily in veterinary medicine. The drug acts by delivering the gene for IL-2 directly into tissues or tumors, leading to local production of this cytokine and stimulation of anti-tumor immune responses. It has been studied and approved for use in cats with fibrosarcoma as an adjuvant therapy post-surgery to delay tumor recurrence and has also shown promise in treating sarcoid tumors in horses via intratumoral injection. In human clinical trials, intratumoral administration of ALVAC-hIL-2 was evaluated for melanoma and leiomyosarcoma skin metastases. The mechanism involves local immune activation through increased T-cell activity mediated by IL-2 expression at the site of administration[1][5][6][7].
