Overview

Alverine is a small molecule antispasmodic drug used primarily to relieve abdominal pain and discomfort associated with gastrointestinal conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and diverticular disease, as well as painful menstruation (dysmenorrhea)[1][2][3][5]. It acts directly on smooth muscle in the gut and uterus, causing relaxation and thereby reducing spasms that lead to pain[1][2][3]. Alverine’s mechanism of action includes direct smooth muscle relaxation—possibly through inhibition of L-type calcium channel inactivation—and antagonism at the 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 1A, which may reduce rectal hypersensitivity[5][6]. The drug is available in capsule form (commonly 60 mg or 120 mg) for adults and children over 12 years old. It is approved for use in several countries for functional gastrointestinal disorders. **Developers:** Dr. Reddy's Laboratories
