Overview

Alvogyl is a specialized dental paste used primarily for the treatment of dry socket (alveolar osteitis), a painful post-extraction complication. It contains a combination of active ingredients that provide antiseptic, analgesic, and healing properties. ## Composition and Mechanism of Action Alvogyl contains three main active ingredients: - Butamben (butyl-paraminobenzoate): Provides moderate anesthetic action effective for several hours after placement - Iodoform: Delivers antimicrobial action against socket infections - Eugenol: Offers analgesic properties with a soothing effect on alveolar tissues that promotes normal healing[1][3] The paste has a fibrous consistency due to Penghawar fibers, which allows for easy filling of the socket and good adherence during the healing process[4][8]. Once placed in the socket, Alvogyl gradually self-eliminates without requiring intervention by the practitioner as normal healing occurs[1][8]. ## Clinical Efficacy Research has demonstrated that Alvogyl is highly effective for dry socket management. A comparative study showed that Alvogyl treatment required fewer dressings and provided faster pain relief compared to zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE)[3]. Patients treated with Alvogyl experienced: - Shorter time required for complete pain relief - Fewer visits for dressing changes - Faster clinical healing of the socket - Lower complication rates (8% vs 36% for ZOE)[3] ## Usage and Administration Alvogyl is applied using tweezers, with approximately 0.2g adequately covering the bottom of the socket and packed gently into place[8]. The product is designed as a one-step, self-eliminating treatment that requires no special attention from the practitioner other than observation of the healing process[1][8]. ## Packaging and Storage Alvogyl is available in: - 10g jars (approximately 50 patients can be treated with one jar)[8] - 12g jars[1][9] The product should be stored at normal temperature in a room kept free from dust and insects, and the container should be carefully closed after use[1].
