Alyteserin-2a is an insulinotropic peptide originally isolated from the skin secretions of the midwife toad, *Alytes obstetricans*. It belongs to the alyteserin-2 family of antimicrobial peptides, which have been repurposed for metabolic research due to their potent insulin-releasing properties. In preclinical models of diet-induced obesity and type 2 diabetes, alyteserin-2a has demonstrated the ability to significantly improve glucose tolerance, enhance insulin secretion, and increase insulin sensitivity. Beyond its glycemic effects, the peptide has shown potential in reducing markers of liver toxicity (such as AST, ALT, and ALP) and kidney injury (creatinine), suggesting a protective role for these organs in the context of metabolic disease. It is currently under investigation as a potential therapeutic candidate for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and associated metabolic disorders.
