ALZT-OP1

ALZT-OP1 is a combination therapy being developed for early Alzheimer's disease. It consists of two components: ALZT-OP1a (cromolyn sodium) delivered via a dry-powder inhaler and ALZT-OP1b (ibuprofen) administered as an oral tablet. The therapy targets neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's disease through complementary mechanisms. Cromolyn, originally used for asthma, has been shown to inhibit amyloid-β plaque formation and reduce inflammatory cytokine release. Ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), works synergistically to slow the inflammatory process in the brain. AZTherapies, a Boston-based biopharmaceutical company, developed this combination approach to potentially slow, arrest, or reverse cognitive and functional decline in early Alzheimer's disease. The therapy has undergone clinical testing, including a Phase 3 trial called COGNITE that completed in November 2020, with results initially expected in early 2021.
