ALZT-QoL is an experimental combination therapy developed by AZTherapies for the treatment of advanced-stage Alzheimer's disease. It is designed to improve the quality of life for patients by utilizing a "compensatory ligand/receptor mechanism" to address the severe cholinergic deficit characteristic of late-stage disease. The formulation combines AZT-201, a muscarinic M1 receptor agonist (likely a proprietary formulation of cevimeline), with the standard-of-care acetylcholinesterase inhibitor donepezil. By simultaneously increasing acetylcholine levels and directly stimulating post-synaptic M1 receptors, ALZT-QoL aims to restore cholinergic neurotransmission more effectively than current monotherapies. The program was intended to provide symptomatic relief and functional improvement, complementing the company's disease-modifying candidate, ALZT-OP1. However, development of the ALZT-QoL program has not progressed significantly in recent years, particularly following the failure of the company's lead Alzheimer's trial in 2021.
