Alzyme is a catalytic antibody, or 'catabody,' developed by Covalent Bioscience for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. It is specifically designed to target and enzymatically degrade amyloid beta (Aβ), the protein responsible for forming neurotoxic plaques in the brain. Unlike conventional monoclonal antibodies that bind to their target in a reversible 1:1 ratio, Alzyme acts as a catalyst, allowing a single antibody molecule to undergo multiple reaction cycles to permanently cleave and clear large quantities of Aβ aggregates. Preclinical studies in transgenic mouse models demonstrated that Alzyme could reduce amyloid plaque burden and decrease neuroinflammation without causing the microbleeds or glial activation often associated with traditional amyloid-targeting therapies. However, development has ceased as Covalent Bioscience has closed its operations.
