AM7410 is a novel small molecule cannabinoid CB1 receptor agonist developed for the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It is designed using a 'soft drug' concept, which combines enzymatic deactivation with a 'depot effect' to optimize topical application to the eye. This approach aims to provide a localized therapeutic effect with a predictable duration of action while minimizing systemic exposure and psychoactive side effects. In preclinical studies, AM7410 demonstrated potent and efficacious agonism at CB1 receptors in hippocampal neurons and significantly lowered intraocular pressure (IOP) by approximately 30% in murine models for up to 5 hours following a single topical administration. The IOP-lowering effect was confirmed to be mediated specifically through CB1 receptors, as the effect was absent in CB1 knockout mice.
