Overview
Amara is a proprietary phyto-therapeutic preparation, specifically known as Amara-Pascoe or Amara-Tropfen, formulated as oral drops for the treatment of functional dyspepsia and other gastrointestinal motility disorders. It is a combination of several bitter herbal extracts, including gentian root (Gentiana lutea), wormwood (Artemisia absinthium), blessed thistle (Cnicus benedictus), and bitter orange peel (Citrus aurantium). The primary mechanism of action involves the stimulation of bitter taste receptors (TAS2Rs) in the mouth and gut, which triggers the release of digestive enzymes, saliva, and gastric acid, while also modulating gastric motor and sensory functions. Clinical evaluation, such as the investigator-initiated trial led by Mark Fox, has investigated its efficacy in reducing symptom burden and improving physiological gastric function in patients with functional dyspepsia.
