Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Amaranth oil is a natural plant-derived oil extracted from the seeds of the Amaranthus species, most commonly Amaranthus caudatus. It is rich in unsaturated fatty acids (notably omega-6 and omega-9), squalene, phytosterols, tocopherols (vitamin E), and other antioxidants. The high squalene content makes it particularly valued for skin care applications due to its moisturizing, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties. Amaranth oil absorbs quickly into the skin without leaving a greasy residue and helps maintain skin barrier function by supporting hydration and elasticity. It also contains vitamins A, C, and E that contribute to collagen synthesis and protection against oxidative stress[1][2][3][6]. In addition to topical use in cosmetics for hydrating and rejuvenating skin or hair, amaranth oil can be consumed as an edible oil; it is gluten-free and may support cardiovascular health by potentially lowering cholesterol levels (as shown in animal studies)[5][8]. However, robust clinical evidence for these systemic effects in humans remains limited[4].
