Overview

Amaranthus palmeri pollen is derived from Palmer's amaranth, a highly competitive and invasive weed species native to North America. [2, 13, 18] The pollen from this plant is recognized as a severe allergen, causing symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever), such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and itchy, watery eyes in sensitized individuals. [1, 2, 5] Extracts of Amaranthus palmeri pollen are used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. For diagnosis, allergenic extracts are used in skin prick tests to identify individuals allergic to the pollen. [1, 6] For therapy, these extracts are used in allergen-specific immunotherapy, commonly known as allergy shots. [6, 20] This treatment involves administering gradually increasing doses of the pollen extract to modulate the patient's immune system, inducing tolerance and reducing the severity of allergic symptoms upon natural exposure. [6, 20] The primary allergenic component identified in the pollen is a 14 kDa protein known as a profilin, which can cause cross-reactivity with other plant pollens and foods. [3]
