Overview

Amaranthus tuberculatus pollen is an allergenic substance derived from the waterhemp plant, a member of the Amaranthaceae family. It is primarily utilized in the form of an allergenic extract for the diagnosis and treatment of Type I hypersensitivity reactions, including allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and bronchial asthma triggered by seasonal pollen exposure. As a diagnostic tool, it is used in skin prick testing to identify specific IgE-mediated sensitivities. Therapeutically, it is employed in allergen immunotherapy (AIT), where repeated exposure to increasing doses of the allergen modulates the immune response. This process shifts the immune profile from a Th2-dominated allergic reaction to a Th1 and regulatory T-cell (Treg) mediated tolerant state, characterized by reduced IgE production and increased levels of allergen-specific IgG4, thereby providing long-term symptom relief.
