AMB-702 is a potent and selective small molecule inhibitor of the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1). This enzyme is responsible for the intracellular conversion of inactive cortisone to active cortisol, thereby regulating local glucocorticoid levels in tissues such as the liver, adipose tissue, and brain. By inhibiting 11β-HSD1, AMB-702 aims to reduce local cortisol concentrations, which is a therapeutic strategy for managing metabolic disorders including type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. The reduction of intracellular cortisol in the liver and adipose tissue can improve insulin sensitivity and lipid profiles. AMB-702 was primarily investigated for its potential in treating metabolic and cardiovascular conditions.
