Ambazone is a small molecule oral antiseptic and antibacterial agent belonging to the thiosemicarbazones class. It was patented in 1957 by Bayer under the trade name Iversal and briefly used in Germany; it remains available in Russia, Romania, and some countries of the former Soviet Union[2][7]. Ambazone is primarily indicated for topical treatment of infections of the mouth and throat, such as tonsillitis, gingivitis, stomatitis, post-tonsillectomy care, and after tooth extraction[1]. Its mechanism of action involves bacteriostatic activity against gram-positive cocci (notably hemolytic streptococcus), with additional antitumor (antileukemic) effects demonstrated in animal models[6][2][4]. The drug interacts with bacterial DNA/RNA/protein synthesis pathways and can stabilize or destabilize DNA depending on its protonation state[6]. Ambazone does not cross the blood-brain barrier and shows low mutagenic potential at therapeutic doses[2][7].
