Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ambilon is a liposomal formulation of the antifungal agent amphotericin B, developed and manufactured by Celon Laboratories. It is designed for intravenous (IV) administration to treat severe systemic and invasive fungal infections, including mucormycosis (black fungus), aspergillosis, cryptococcal meningitis, and candidiasis, as well as visceral leishmaniasis. The liposomal delivery system was developed to significantly reduce the nephrotoxicity typically associated with conventional amphotericin B deoxycholate while maintaining high antifungal efficacy. The drug's mechanism of action involves binding to ergosterol, a vital sterol component of fungal cell membranes, which leads to the formation of transmembrane pores. These pores increase membrane permeability, causing the leakage of intracellular components and ultimately resulting in fungal cell death.
