Overview

AmBisome is a liposomal formulation of amphotericin B, a polyene antifungal agent. It exerts its antifungal activity by binding to ergosterol, a key component of the fungal cell membrane. This binding leads to the formation of transmembrane pores, causing the leakage of essential intracellular components and ultimately resulting in fungal cell death. Developed by Gilead Sciences, AmBisome is indicated for the treatment of serious, invasive fungal infections such as candidiasis, aspergillosis, and cryptococcal meningitis. In clinical research conducted by the FOVEA Group, high-dose AmBisome was evaluated as a preemptive therapy in septic intensive care unit patients with multiple Candida colonizations to prevent systemic infections.
