Overview

Ambrosia trifida pollen is a sterile allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the giant ragweed plant. It is classified as a biologic and is used for both the diagnosis and treatment of allergies. For diagnosis, it is administered via percutaneous or intradermal skin tests to confirm sensitivity in patients with a clinical history of ragweed allergy. [4] For treatment, it is used as a form of immunotherapy, administered subcutaneously to reduce the allergic symptoms caused by ragweed pollen, such as allergic rhinitis (hay fever). [3, 4] The mechanism of action involves desensitization, where repeated administration of the extract modulates the patient's immune response to the ragweed allergens. This process is thought to involve a shift in T-cell responses and the production of blocking antibodies, which reduces the severity of the IgE-mediated allergic reaction upon environmental exposure to the pollen. [4] It is marketed under a Biologic License Application (BLA) and is available from several manufacturers, including Greer Laboratories (Stallergenes Greer) and ALK-Abelló, Inc. [3, 4, 14]
