ambroxol

Ambroxol is a small molecule mucolytic and secretolytic agent used primarily for airway secretion clearance therapy in respiratory diseases associated with viscid or excessive mucus. It acts by stimulating the synthesis and release of surfactant from type II pneumocytes, reducing mucus viscosity and promoting mucociliary transport. Ambroxol also enhances ciliary activity through calcium-mediated signaling pathways, increases bicarbonate import to raise cellular pH, and stimulates chloride ion release via activation of anoctamine 1 (ANO1), further improving mucus clearance. Additionally, it has local anesthetic properties that provide pain relief in acute sore throat and may exert analgesic effects by suppressing C-fiber function.
