Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ambroxol methylsulfonate (also known as ambroxol mesylate) is a mucolytic and secretolytic agent used in the treatment of respiratory disorders characterized by excessive or viscid mucus. It is a salt form of ambroxol, a metabolite of bromhexine. The drug works by increasing the proportion of serous bronchial secretion, stimulating surfactant production by type II pneumocytes, and enhancing ciliary activity, which collectively improve mucus transport and clearance. Additionally, ambroxol has been shown to inhibit voltage-gated sodium channels (particularly Nav1.8), contributing to its antitussive and local anesthetic properties. In clinical research conducted by the Hospital of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, an oral granule formulation of ambroxol methylsulfonate is being evaluated for its efficacy in treating cough associated with small pulmonary inflammatory nodules.
