Overview

**Amfecloral** is a discontinued orally administered small-molecule anorectic that was marketed in the United States as **Acutran** for obesity. It is an amphetamine-class imine prodrug formed from dextroamphetamine and chloral hydrate; following metabolism, it releases amphetamine-related stimulant activity and chloral-hydrate-related sedative-hypnotic activity. The sedative component was thought to offset the stimulant effects, and the product was characterized as having limited stimulant activity. Acutran was withdrawn from the market in 1973.
