Overview
Amfepramone is a sympathomimetic stimulant drug of the phenethylamine and cathinone classes used as an appetite suppressant for the short-term management of obesity. It acts primarily as a prodrug to ethcathinone. Ethcathinone is a weak dopaminergic and serotonergic agent but has significantly stronger activity on norepinephrine reuptake inhibition. Amfepramone reduces appetite by stimulating the central nervous system in a manner similar to amphetamines and other anorectics. The drug was previously marketed under several brand names for weight loss but has been withdrawn from many markets due to safety concerns including cardiovascular risks and limited efficacy[1][4][5][6].
