Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Amibid DM is an over-the-counter combination medication containing the cough suppressant dextromethorphan hydrobromide and the expectorant guaifenesin. It is formulated as a 12-hour extended-release tablet. Dextromethorphan acts centrally on the cough center in the medulla to elevate the cough threshold, primarily through sigma-1 receptor agonism and NMDA receptor antagonism. Guaifenesin acts as an expectorant by increasing the volume and reducing the viscosity of secretions in the trachea and bronchi, facilitating their removal by ciliary action and coughing. Originally supplied by Amide Pharmaceutical (later Actavis Totowa), Amibid DM is indicated for the symptomatic relief of coughs associated with the common cold, bronchitis, and other respiratory tract infections in adults and children 12 years of age and older.
