Amicidin-α is a synthetic antimicrobial peptide (AMP) developed by the Swiss biotechnology company Amicidis. It is specifically engineered for the prevention and treatment of surgical site infections (SSIs) by providing a broad-spectrum bactericidal effect. The peptide works by targeting and physically disrupting the bacterial cell membrane, a mechanism that is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including multi-drug resistant strains such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Due to its rapid, membrane-disrupting action, Amicidin-α has a significantly lower propensity for inducing bacterial resistance compared to traditional antibiotics. It is designed for local application, typically formulated as a paste or gel, to be used directly within the surgical cavity during procedures to ensure high local concentrations and minimal systemic exposure.
