Overview

Amidotrizoic acid, also known as diatrizoic acid, is a high-osmolality, water-soluble, iodinated radiopaque contrast medium used in diagnostic imaging. It is typically administered as a mixture of its sodium and meglumine salts. The molecule contains three iodine atoms which absorb X-rays, providing the contrast necessary to visualize internal structures such as the gastrointestinal tract, urinary system, and blood vessels during X-ray and computed tomography (CT) examinations. While it has been largely superseded by low-osmolality contrast agents for intravascular use due to a higher risk of adverse reactions, it remains a standard agent for oral and rectal administration in the evaluation of gastrointestinal disorders. Laboratorios Juste (Justesa) is a significant manufacturer of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API).
