Amigesic

Amigesic is a brand name for salsalate, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) belonging to the salicylate class. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other rheumatic disorders, as well as soft tissue injuries like bursitis and tendinitis. As a prodrug, salsalate is relatively insoluble in the gastric environment and is absorbed in the small intestine, where it is hydrolyzed into two molecules of salicylic acid. Its therapeutic effects are mediated through the inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which prevents the synthesis of prostaglandins responsible for pain, swelling, and fever. Amigesic was supplied by Amide Pharmaceutical Inc. as an oral tablet, although it is classified as an unapproved drug by the FDA, meaning its specific labeling has not undergone the modern formal approval process for safety and efficacy.
